Fjörfiskur, the employee club at Samherji in Dalvik, recently hosted its family day in the ski area in Böggvisstaðafjall. It is an annual event where Fjörfiskur rents the space for three hours and invites members along with their spouses, children and grandchildren.
Fjörfiskur provided ski equipment for those who needed it, and everyone was served waffles with hot chocolate. It is fifth-time Fjörfiskur hosts the event, and this time 80 people attended.
The social life of employees at Samherji in Dalvík is quite dynamic. Fjörfiskur organizes numerous activities for employees, and the events are distributed evenly throughout the year. The next one is an international evening with a Thai theme that will take place on April 4th.
"On these multinational evenings, we get members to cook dishes from their home countries and then invite us to a party at the cafeteria in the cold storage house. The hosts cook the food, give a short introduction about their homeland and take care of the entertainment as well," says Ragnheiður Rut Friðgeirsdóttir, the chairman of Fjörfiskur. Ragnheiður says that the multinational evenings have been a regular event for the past five years and take place two to three times a year. In addition to a multinational evening with a Thai theme, there is a Polish evening, a Filipino evening, a Latvian/Russian evening. Then there is an Icelandic evening as well. Ragnheiður says these events are necessary for a multinational workplace such as Samherji in Dalvík. The nature of the work does not always offer opportunities for a lot of communication during working hours. Therefore it means a lot for the workers to meet regularly outside work.
Members of Fjörfiskur are going to a concert together in April. Then Fjöfiskur is preparing for a cultural trip to Reykjavik in May, where the group will be staying for two nights and in June a river rafting trip to Skagafjörður has been organized. Samherji's employees in Dalvík go abroad every other year, and Fjörfiskur subsidizes flights and accommodation.
