The Planning Agency, (Skipulagsstofnun) which monitors the application of law and regulations on planning, building and environmental impact assessment, has approved Samherji´s  6000tn salmon farming in Reyðarfjörður, as described in Samherji´s presentation.

The implementation was adjudged to an environmental evaluation 2.april 2001. Samherji hf., since then worked on the environmental evaluation report, acquiring assessment from specialists and relevant establishments, both local and abroad.  The report was turned in to The Planning agency last July.

The Planning agency´s verdict is that salmon farming in Reyðarfjörður, according to Samherji´s plans, would not have substantial impact on the environment and therefore approves the execution.

“We put a lot of work into carefully preparing this report, we seeked assistance from the most competent experts, so The Planning agency´s verdict is just what we had been hoping for.  The conclusion of the report indicated that the implementation would not have substantial environmental impact.

This sanction is of great significance for fishfarming in Iceland.  A production frame has been created which makes way for a size viability.  All in all production of salmon on the East coast would then be sufficient to build up the necessary support activity for fish farming in Iceland.  This is therefore very good news both for the the industry´s structure as well as the economy on the East coast,” says Finnbogi Jónsson, Chairman of the board of Samherji hf.
